Summary
In 2008, Volunteers for Adult Literacy in Florida (VALF), implemented a grant program targeting medium and small volunteer literacy programs. Of the seven programs who applied, three received a $300 mini-grant. The programs, spread from north to south Florida, provided free instruction for a total of 438 students using 185 volunteers in 2007.

Their grant projects will provide the following:
Literacy Services of Indian River County, Inc. (LSIRC) program is purchasing English for the Spanish Speaker Book One to improve the English speaking and writing skills for up to 180 adult literacy students.

The Jackson County Public Library Computer Center is purchasing Rosetta Stone software to provide instruction for migrants and other workers to increase quality and intensity of instruction for up to 15 non-English speakers.

Literacy Volunteers of America – Monroe Countyprovides free tutoring for the southernmost county in the United States with one of the highest cost of living in the United States. Staff will train ten or more volunteer tutors to work with 10 or more non-English speaking students who work in the tourist industry. They will serve 100 students total.
